După ce a jucat într-un videoclip rolul unei banale călugăriţe cu un aer satanic care înghite un rozariu, Lady Gaga a trecut la nivelul următor şi şi-a adjudecat un rol mai greu din istoria creştinismului. Potrivit Huffington Post, cântăreţa s-a transformat în piesa şi în videoclipul „Judas” în Maria Magdalena.
„Atunci când vine la mine sunt gata/ Îi voi spăla picioarele cu părul meu dacă e nevoie”, cântă Lady Gaga în piesa al cărei refren este „Sunt îndrăgostită de Iuda”. Single-ul i-a înfuriat pe creştini încă de dinainte să aibă ocazia să o asculte. „Lady Gaga încearcă să continue să-i şocheze pe catolici şi pe creştini în general. Se îmbracă precum o călugăriţă, înghite rozariul. .. S-a transformat într-o caricatură a ei înşeşi”, a declarat Bill Donohue, preşedintele Ligii Catolice din SUA.
Laurieann Gibson, coregrafa lui Lady Gaga, spune că echipa nu a vrut ca piesa şi videoclipul să jignească pe cineva. „Au existat câteva schimbări şi dezbateri în toiul nopţii pentru că la un moment dat erau două viziuni complet diferite. A mea era: <>”, a povestit ea pentru Hollywood Reporter. Şi a vorbit despre felul în care a ieşit videoclipul cu mulţumirea unui apostol care a reuşit să salveze un suflet de la pieire. „Nu vrem să ne atingem de lucruri pe care nu avem niciun drept să le atingem ci să arătăm că poţi ajunge din părţile întunecate ale sufletului tău, din partea care seamănă cu Iuda, într-o minunată lumină. Este o piesă despre inspiraţie şi despre faptul că nu trebuie să renunţi niciodată. Am creat un nou Ierusalim”, a mai spus Gibson.
